NEW VINTAGE 2018 – EXPECTED RELEASE END OF MAY 2019
In 1853, the Kalleske vineyard and farm was established at Greenock in the Barossa’s North-West. For 97 years horses were used to work the vineyard and land. This changed in 1950 when a new type of horse-power arrived on the property, a ‘Fordson’ Major tractor. The Fordson soon became a valuable and integral part of vineyard and farm activities. Fordson Zinfandel (a.k.a. Primitivo) is a single vineyard wine that’s been grown, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske property. Vigilant grapegrowing combined with traditional winemaking and maturation in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads has resulted in a flavoursome varietal Zinfandel displaying classic structure and richness typical of the Kalleske vineyard.
Vintage 2017 was stunning. The vines got off to a fantastic start with a wetter than average Winter and mild Spring. Summer brought typically average warm conditions with some excellent rainfall, twice the average. This kept the vines in superb condition for steady ripening into Autumn which remained dry with warm sunny days and cool nights. Yields from 2017 are good and quality is exceptional.
Fordson is a single vineyard Zinfandel from the Kalleske property. The hand-pruned vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay.
The grapes were harvested on April 21st and pressed seven days later on April 28th, with pumpovers employed twice daily whilst on skins. Following pressing the wine was matured in seasoned hogsheads for thirteen months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
Fordson Zinfandel 2017 is dark red-black in colour.
The varietal aromatics bounce forth with displays of rose petal, crushed berries, jam, musk and cloves.
The palate is full-bodied with silky red and black fruits dominating. There’s also a touch of licorice, satsuma plum and sarsaparilla. Natural tannins are evident and perfectly integrated, framing the palate nicely. Seasoned barrel maturation has ensured the bright fruits are foremost. A complex and very drinkable wine with a very lengthy finish. Approachable and fruit forward, Fordson Zinfandel can be enjoyed now or over the next five years.
