2017 Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz

3 in stock

Johann Georg Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from the oldest vineyard on the Kalleske farm, planted in 1875, that produces very low yields from gnarly, dry grown vines. The wine is a tribute to Johann Georg Kalleske, the first Kalleske ancestor to migrate to Australia from Prussia in 1838. The old vine fruit is open-top fermented, basket pressed and matured in new and used French and American hogsheads for two years prior to bottling. A powerful, but elegant wine of great sophistication

Growing Season

Vintage 2017 was stunning.  The vines got off to a fantastic start with a wetter than average Winter and mild Spring.  Summer brought typically average warm conditions with some excellent rainfall, twice the average.  This kept the vines in superb condition for steady ripening into Autumn which remained dry with warm sunny days and cool nights.  Yields from 2017 are good and quality is exceptional.

This vineyard was planted in 1875 and produces very low yields of around one tonne per acre from old, gnarly, dry grown vines.  The top soil is sandy with excellent clay subsoil.

The ancient Shiraz vines were hand-picked on April 5th and the grapes destemmed into a small open top fermenter.  The grapes were fermented for twelve days where a heading down screen was employed to submerge the skins throughout the fermentation ensuring gentle colour and flavour extraction.  The must was pressed and immediately filled to new and seasoned French oak hogsheads.  The wine was matured for two years prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

2017 Johann Georg Shiraz is deep purple-black in colour.

The aromatics are profoundly engaging.  There are florals of heritage rose, clove spice and ripe plum.  Plus savoury elements emerge including charcuterie, black olives and a touch of baked herbs.  Very captivating.

The palate is full-bodied with delightful finesse reflecting the cooler 2017 vintage.  Richly flavoured with ripe red and black fruits, licorice and spice.  Cedary French oak is evident and well poised adding further complexity.  The natural tannins add structure whilst being perfectly integrated.  A very long finish of pristine fruit completes this very polished and stylish Shiraz.  2017 Johann is a superb wine that will ultimately benefit from a decade or two in the cellar.
