Johann Georg Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from the oldest vineyard on the Kalleske farm, planted in 1875, that produces very low yields from gnarly, dry grown vines. The wine is a tribute to Johann Georg Kalleske, the first Kalleske ancestor to migrate to Australia from Prussia in 1838. The old vine fruit is open-top fermented, basket pressed and matured in new and used French and American hogsheads for two years prior to bottling. A powerful, but elegant wine of great sophistication
The 2018 vintage was superb. Winter was slightly wetter than average getting the vines off to a brilliant start leading them into Spring which was warmer and drier than average. Rain in early December refreshed the vines and ensured they remained strong and healthy for the overall dry and hot Summer. Autumn also remained dry with perfect Autumnal temperatures leading into harvest. The 2018 yields are good and the quality is excellent, a classic Barossa vintage.
This vineyard was planted in 1875 and produces very low yields of around one tonne per acre from old, gnarly, dry grown vines. The top soil is sandy with excellent clay subsoil.
The ancient Shiraz vines were hand-picked on March 23rd and the grapes destemmed into a small open top fermenter. The grapes were fermented for fourteen days where a heading down screen was employed to submerge the skins throughout the fermentation ensuring gentle colour and flavour extraction. The must was pressed and immediately filled to new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. The wine was matured for two years prior to bottling.
2018 Johann Georg Shiraz is deep red-black in colour.
Alive with aromatics, the nose is filled with floral perfume, dark berries, cedar, nutmeg and an attractive savoury jus. There’s also dark chocolate and a hint of coffee.
The palate displays perfect balance. It is full bodied with powerful flavours and intensity but maintaining poise. Black fruits are complexed with fine barrel ferment characters. It has a viscous mouthfeel counterposed with a vein of graceful natural tannins throughout. This is a replete wine, no gaps, distinguished, completed with a long-lasting finish. 2018 Johann is a superb Shiraz that will ultimately benefit from a decade or two in the cellar.
