2019 Eduard Shiraz

99 in stock

In 1838 Karl Heinrich ‘Eduard’ Kalleske and his three siblings together with their parents Johann Georg and Johanne Dorothea migrated from Prussia. They landed in the newly established colony of South Australia and in 1853 they settled at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa Valley and established our Kalleske farm. Eduard and his wife Anna ‘Rosina’ worked the Kalleske vineyard until the 1880s when their son took over the reins. Today six generations later those old vines are still prospering, thanks to the foresight and hard work of our ancestors. We dedicate this wine to Eduard which is from a selection of old vine Shiraz vineyards planted on our Kalleske property between 1905 to 1971. Hand winemaking and two years maturation has resulted in a stunning old vine wine destined for long term cellaring.

Growing Season

Quality from 2019 is stunning.  It was a warm and extremely dry growing season with rainfall down significantly (39%), making it one of the driest years in the past century.  Summer was 3 degrees warmer than average.  Yields were impacted by the dry season, leading to smaller berries and bunches.  Importantly quality is brilliant producing richly flavoured, intense wines.

Eduard is sourced from three vineyard blocks on the Kalleske property that were planted between 1905 and 1973,  Vines are dry grown and produce low yields.  The soil is sandy loam with excellent clay subsoil.

The old Shiraz vines were harvested on March 5th and March 8th and the grapes destemmed into small open top fermenters.  The grapes were fermented for 10-12 days on skins where hand pumpovers were employed twice daily.  The must was traditionally pressed and immediately filled to new and seasoned French & American oak hogsheads where it completed fermentation.  The wine was matured for two years prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

2019 Eduard Shiraz is deep black in colour with a purple hue.

It is immediately alluring with impressive aromas of blackcurrant, plum and licorice before opening to rose florals, dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco all suggestive of a complex and serious wine ahead.

Powerful and full-bodied, immense dark fruits immediately explode on the palate.  Rich, varietal Shiraz flavours dominate and are complimented by hints of vanilla and coffee from classy oak barrel usage.  The natural tannins are strong adding a muscular structure and further interest to this extensive wine.  It captivates to the end with a lingering and almost perpetual finish of fine fruits, oak and tannin all in perfect harmony completing a mighty Barossa old vine Shiraz.  Eduard can be enjoyed now but will graciously reward cellaring for a decade or more.

“A selection from four parcels on the estate, ranging from 1905 to 1973 plantings. It has a strong violet and iodine edge to the nose with blueberry and dark chocolate, as well as blackcurrant. There’s such depth to the palate with ripe dark plums, dark chocolate and lightly toasted spices. Good balance.”
