Kalleske Old Vine Grenache is made from a low yielding, single vineyard planted in 1935 on our Kalleske estate. Situated on the outskirts of Greenock in the North-Western Barossa Valley, the Kalleske’s have been farming this property for over 150 years and the vineyard is now tended by sixth and seventh generation family members. Following picking these dry-grown Grenache grapes were fermented in open fermenters and then gently pressed in our estate winery. The wine was matured in seasoned oak hogsheads giving a complex Grenache wine, which will benefit from cellaring.
Vintage 2020 has delivered wines of amazing quality. However, quantity is very limited, with it being one of the lowest grape yields ever in the Barossa at around 50% of average. Yields were dire due to a combination of early mild frost conditions, then a notably windy period (45% windier) around flowering leading to poor set (not many berries) followed by some hot days in November and an overall dry growing season (34% down). Notably, quality is of the highest echelon with rich colours and intense robust flavours.
Old Vine Grenache is made from a single vineyard planted in 1935 as bush vines on the Kalleske farm. The vineyard soil is shallow sand with light clay subsoil and the grapes are entirely dry-grown ensuring intensely flavoured fruit.
Following hand picking on March 30th, grapes were destemmed into an open-top fermenter. The must was fermented using native yeast and the fermenting juice was pumped-over twice daily for flavour and colour extraction for the 8 day fermentation. The must was then traditionally pressed and filled to barrel. The wine was matured in seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for fourteen months prior to bottling.
2020 Old Vine Grenache is deep burgundy-red in colour.
Elevated aromatics jump from the glass indicating a stunning wine awaits. Enticing and energetic with bright musk, ripe raspberry, sweet spice, sandalwood, red liquorice, lavender and a touch of mint.
The palate is soft, rich and full-flavoured. Plush varietal Grenache fruit is intense with juicy flavours of black cherry and sarsaparilla. Natural tannins give a fine backbone and flawless structure. The wine is rich throughout, from the grand start to its lengthy finish it exudes old vine Grenache character. This distinguished Grenache drinks well now but can equally be cellared.
