The 2020 Greenock Shiraz is one of our best ever. Period! It possibly sounds like an arrogant statement, but as I (Troy) write this, I honestly believe this is one of the greatest wines to come from our Kalleske winery in the 20 vintages we’ve been making wine.
The Greenock Shiraz along with our Old Vine Grenache were the first Kalleske wines released when we began making our own wine back in 2002 and the Greenock has since become a favourite for many. We are excited to be officially releasing the latest vintage of our Greenock Shiraz, the much anticipated 2020 vintage!
There was nothing fancy or different about the winemaking for the 2020 vintage Greenock, the season delivered amazing quality grapes that a year and a half later have matured into a complete and stunning wine that can be enjoyed now or for decades to come. 2020 wines are in limited quantity so they won’t last long on the shelf but the reds will certainly be ones to last a long time in the cellar.
The “Greenock” block of grapes was harvested on March 17th and crushed into open top fermenters. Ferments were warm with hand pump-overs twice a day for 13 days on skins prior to pressing. After pressing the wine was filled to a mix of 35% new and the balance used American and French oak hogsheads. It completed primary fermentation and underwent natural malolactic fermentation in barrel and was matured for fourteen months prior to bottling.
Greenock Shiraz 2020 is deep black in colour with a purple rim. The aroma is powerful, instantly desirable, bright and engaging with dark plum, perfumed violets, black liquorice, clove spice, Christmas cake and toasty mocha oak. The palate is immense, richly flavoured and full-bodied. Pristine black fruits weave throughout, combined with classy barrel maturation and natural tannins giving a robust structure this is truly a well-balanced and complete wine. Generous and pure with a vast finish, this is a powerful, polished wine of the highest calibre. Greenock is a complex, refined and classy Barossa Shiraz that has a long cellaring future.
